11.09.25 Dramatic Rescue on Scroby Sands
11 September 2025

Lifeboat: ANNETTE THURLOW (45-01) – ALB

Four people were brought to safety after their yacht ran aground on the notorious Scroby Sands in what has been described as one of the most dramatic incidents our volunteers have faced in recent years.

Conditions on scene were challenging, with shifting sands and breaking seas making the stranded yacht unstable and at risk of further damage. The crew of Annette Thurlow were quickly on station and carried out a highly skilled rescue, transferring all four casualties to safety and securing the vessel as best as conditions allowed.

All four individuals were safely returned to shore, cold and shaken but otherwise unharmed. Speaking after the rescue, crew members described it as “a complex and fast-moving situation where teamwork, timing and experience made all the difference.”

For those who would like to see more, the BBC has covered the story in detail, including video footage from the scene.
