the caister lifeboat museum development...

Work to improve Caister Lifeboat’s museum, enabling it to open more frequently during the winter months, have now been completed.
The project involved installing a double-glazed screen inside the seaward-facing boat shed doors. This addition will significantly reduce draughts and improve weatherproofing, creating a warmer and more comfortable environment for both volunteers and visitors.
From October to April, temperatures inside the shed have traditionally been too low, and poor draught-proofing has made it impossible to heat the space effectively. Thanks to a £27,000 grant, the first phase of improvements has now been delivered by Great Yarmouth-based Studios East, appointed as design and build contractor. Wherever possible, local suppliers have been used throughout the project, including for the timber frame and glazing.
The Great Yarmouth Borough Council Rural BUSINESS & COMMUNITY project is part-funded by the UK Government through the Rural England Prosperity Fund, was supported by the Great Yarmouth Borough Council and delivered in Partnership with Norfolk County Council.’
Caister Lifeboat contributed £6,750 in match funding. However, directors allocated profits from the on-site shop during 2024/25 to ensure that supporters’ donations remained focused on lifesaving operations.
During 2025, Caister Lifeboat recorded record sales and donations through its visitor facilities. Despite this success, winter has always been particularly challenging for volunteers due to the cold conditions inside the building. Such is the dedication of the team that short guided tours were still conducted last winter, but the improved conditions will now allow the museum to open fully throughout the colder months.
The enhanced facilities will also enable the organisation to welcome more volunteers, helping to reduce social isolation and strengthen friendships within the team.
Further upgrades are already being planned, including the installation of interactive displays. Applications for additional grants have been submitted, but if you or your company would like to support these ambitious plans, please contact secretary@caisterlifeboat.org.uk
